Hello, I read your article about otherkin, and was very impressed. It's the most down-to-earth explanation of otherkin I've read yet, and hopefully it will prevent future trolls/flamers. It's also the only article I've read that gives advice to people who know any otherkin (like the fact that they are still the same people they were before they told you about themselves, which SOOOO many people seem no not realize...). Anyway;

If you are interested, there is another sub-culture that you could add to your site if you so choose, and the sub-culture I'm speaking of is therianthropy.

Therianthropy is, as simply put as possible, an animal in a human's body. It is very similar to otherkin, some even consider it a branch of otherkin-ness, but there are some key differences. Therianthropes (or therians, as most call them), are mostly earthly creatures, as opposed to otherkin being elves, fae, dragons, etc. Therians also go through something called "shifting," where they fade in and out of having a mindset/personality of their theriotype (the animal they are). When shifted, many therians will usually acquire very minor personality changes, but shifts can range from forgetting how to talk, to chewing on things without realizing (very common actually ^_^), and even walking around on all fours growling at people (not as common :P). Some claim that they shift under stress, or when relaxed, and others claim that they can shift at will, usually through meditation. There are also therians that are "permanently" shifted, called con-therians by some.

Anyway, I should probably wrap this up. I only summed up therianthropy, so there is still a lot I didn't mention. If you want to know more about therianthropy, there are many forums full of therians willing to answer questions. I'm a therian myself, so feel free to e-mail me with questions, comments, spam, whatever. I'd be glad to help.

P.S. If you do decide to add therianthropy to ES, it could be a section of the article on otherkin, since they share many similarities, and most therians and otherkin consider therianthropy a branch of otherkin.

**Scratches head**

I can give you a mentally ill's POV on soulbonding. I'm Schizophrenic and a mild case at that. I can tell the difference between my bonds and a psychotic fart. Schizophrenia is overwhelmingly negative and it uses stuff in everyday life to make your life hell. It's like it records every day deeds and replays them, warping them into creative new constructs. There is no logic behind it. It taunts and teases.

Soulbonding, as a whole, is much more rewarding and my bonds will help me through a rough patch. There's reason, distinct thought and planning behind the conversations involved with a bond. Bonds, for the most part, don't interrupt your life in the same manner.

On a different note, I do have a gripe with the article (or actually the web site the quote was gacked from). I have SEVERE issues with the following quote:

“Schizophrenics are unstable, unable to cope in everyday society, and often dangerous to themselves and others"

True - we can be very unstable. Emotionally and mentally we can be quite odd, especially when fighting decades of mental torture. However the majority of Schizophrenics are **NOT** dangerous. That's a myth that society insists on passing around, helped by the Media. If you saw me on the street you would never know I was ill. If we are violent (again, I stress is RARE), it's vented on OURSELVES.

To me this is such a very fascinating idea. Although I myself don't believe I am an otakukin, I try very hard to keep my mind open to all possibilities and beliefs and so do not write them off as completely crazy. As "Greer" said, how is one believing that any more crazy than many humans' shared belief in the idea of a Christian God? We know very little about the mysteries of our life here on Earth and until we understand everything I believe we should all try to refrain from dismissing anything as complete bullshit. "Experience has shown, and a true philosophy will always show, that a vast, perhaps the larger portion of the truth arises from the seemingly irrelevant." - Edgar Allan Poe

Random Thoughts:

In recent years, there has been an uprising of people within the community in general who are extremely analytical in nature and many attempt to put theirs and others' beliefs under scientific scrutiny. Undoubtedly, this takes away a bit of the fun for the younger and newly awakening kin, who still need a little "room to pretend." They need time to try out different ways of viewing things, to figure out what makes the most sense to them. Truthfully, I believe every Otherkin has at some point after their awakening gone through a "fluffy phase."

As a born-again human and veteran of the Otherkin community, I believe a number of 'kin (especially ones who don't identify with Otherkin until they learn about it) are simply troubled souls who need a sense of identity to cling to. Why they choose a mythological identity - it gives them a sense of grandeur to counter their perceived worthlessness, plainness or alienation. Otherkin of this nature are generally very emotionally attached to their beliefs, and will degrade into emotional outbursts and feelings of persecution whenever their beliefs are analyzed by even the most benevolent skeptic.
However, this applies to a disintegrating number of Otherkin, and thus by no means is the majority. Unfortunately for the rest, it is these Otherkin who are undoubtedly the subject of ridicule and hatred on many internet communities.

Seems like a lot of people are anime and manga-based otakin, right?

Just wanted to say that I'm not. I...let's say I 'believe myself to be', am from the popular American musical Avenue Q.

Clearly, not a usual otakin, but not all of us are from Japan.

"However, delusions are a symptom of several mental illnesses, and being delusional in and of itself is not a diagnosis."

Yes, yes it is actually. It is called delusional disorder and diagnostic criteria can be found in the DSM.
